"This site includes nine seowon depicting a type of neo-Confucian academy of the Joseon Dynasty (fifteenth-nineteenth century AD) located in the center and south of the country. Teaching, veneration of scholars and interaction with the environment were the essential functions of seowon, which are reflected in their design. Located near mountains and water sources, they participated in the culture of mind and body. The buildings in the form of pavilions were to facilitate the links with the landscape. The seowons illustrate a historical process in which Neoconfucianism from China was adapted to Korean conditions."
